Worth being straight about: Rw is a laboratory figure measured across a spread of frequencies. Train and road noise is weighted towards the lower end, where glazing performs less well than the single number suggests. Treat the numbers as a way of comparing units against each other, not as a promise about your bedroom.
The detail matters as much as the glass
This is the part that gets skipped, and it is the part that decides whether the specification you paid for actually turns up in the room. Sound travels through air far more readily than through solid material. A continuous gap of a few millimetres around a frame will let through enough noise to undo the difference between a standard unit and an acoustic one entirely. You can fit a 42 Rw window into a badly sealed opening and end up with the performance of a 33.
So the work around the frame is not finishing, it is part of the acoustic build-up:
- The gap between the frame and the trimmed structural opening gets fully packed with insulation, not left as a void with a bead of foam at the front.
- The reveals are insulated and then sealed continuously at the plasterboard, with the joint taped or sealed rather than left open behind an architrave.
- Any service penetration through the reveal, a blind cable or a downlight, gets sealed. A single unsealed hole is an air path.
- The unit is packed and fixed so the frame is not bearing hard on the structure in a way that couples vibration into the timber.

The problem with cooling a loft room you cannot open up
There is a second consequence of the noise that people only meet after the room is built. A loft room under the slope gets hot in summer, and the usual free fix is to open a rooflight at night and let the heat out. Next to the mainline and the A12, that is exactly what you do not want to do, because opening the glass lets the noise straight back in. A habitable room needs background ventilation under Part F, and if you are reluctant to open the rooflight because of the noise, that air has to be provided another way. A trickle vent built into the rooflight, or a controlled background vent elsewhere in the room, keeps the air moving without leaving a sash open to the line all night. It is a small point that gets missed on noise-driven jobs, and it is worth raising at survey so the room is both quiet and healthy rather than one at the cost of the other. Where a room genuinely needs the option to open, an electric skylight with a rain sensor lets it air on a timer and close itself, which suits a high rooflight you cannot reach anyway.
The stock, and where the noise-sensitive rooms are

Will an acoustic rooflight stop me hearing trains in Marks Tey?
