Copdock is roughly 3.5 miles south-west of Ipswich, about ten minutes out, and it is defined more than most villages by the road running past it. The A12 and the A14 meet at the interchange here, and the village sits within earshot of both. Housing is mixed: a period core with older cottages and farm buildings, and later twentieth-century additions filling in around it.

Why road noise arrives through the roof
Traffic noise from a road at a distance does not travel in a neat horizontal line. It reflects, it carries on the wind, and a good deal of it reaches a house from above the eaves rather than through the wall. A tiled roof with insulation between and under the rafters is a reasonably good sound barrier because of its mass and its layers. Put a rooflight in it and you have replaced a mass-and-layers construction with a single glazed unit.
A standard sealed double-glazed rooflight typically gives sound reduction somewhere in the low thirties of decibels. That is fine in a quiet lane. Beside a busy corridor it is the weak point of the whole roof, and the difference is very noticeable in a converted loft bedroom where the window is close to your head.
What actually reduces it
Three things, in order of how much they do.
- Laminated acoustic glazing. A laminated pane uses an interlayer that damps vibration rather than simply adding mass. Acoustic laminates are specifically formulated for it. This is the single biggest gain available and it is usually an option on the same unit rather than a different window entirely.
- Asymmetric pane thicknesses. Two panes of the same thickness resonate at the same frequency and let it straight through. Different thicknesses in the same unit shift those resonances apart and close the gap in performance. It costs little and it is often overlooked.
- The install itself. A rooflight sealed properly around the frame, with insulation packed into the reveal rather than left as an air gap, performs to its rating. One fitted with gaps does not, regardless of what the glass cost.
Acoustic laminate has a useful secondary benefit here. It also cuts the drumming of heavy rain on the glass, which is the other complaint we hear about rooflights in exposed positions. Same specification, two problems solved.
The period core and the later houses
Structurally, Copdock is two jobs. The older cottages and converted farm buildings have hand-cut roofs: rafters at irregular centres, purlins running across the slope, sometimes previous alterations hidden under plaster. Those can be cut and trimmed, because a cut roof tolerates it, but the trimmer sizes have to come off the actual span measured at survey.
The later twentieth-century houses are trussed. Trusses are engineered as complete components, every web member carries load, and we fit between them rather than through them. Standard 600mm centres give a clear bay for a standard-width unit, which makes for a quick and clean pitched roof skylight installation. If you want more glass than one bay allows, two units in adjacent bays spread the daylight better than one wide one anyway.

Ventilation without opening the window
The other thing a road corridor changes is how willing people are to open a rooflight at all. A bedroom that needs air at two in the morning is not a bedroom where you want to open a window onto traffic noise.
Trickle vents fitted into the head of the frame give background ventilation with the unit closed, which handles the moisture problem without the noise problem. Where you do want opening ventilation on a summer evening, an electric rooflight with a rain sensor lets you use it on demand and closes itself when the weather turns, which is genuinely useful on a window you cannot easily reach.
Solar gain on the road-facing slopes
Plenty of Copdock properties sit on open plots with slopes facing south or west. The g-value of the glazing controls how much solar energy comes through, and a standard unit sits around 0.6. Solar control glazing brings that down significantly while keeping most of the visible daylight. If the room is an open-plan kitchen or a loft study, that choice decides whether it is usable in July.
The winter counterpart is the U-value, which Part L sets for any new opening. A modern double or triple-glazed unit with a warm-edge spacer and a thermally broken frame meets it comfortably. Specify it once: acoustic laminate and asymmetric pane thicknesses are cheap at the point of order and impossible to add later. On a Copdock roof, get the glazing right when the unit is bought rather than living with a standard pane for the next twenty years.
Which slope you open matters as much as the glass
The glazing does most of the acoustic work, but position does the rest and it is free. On a Copdock house with the A12 on one side, a rooflight on the slope facing away from the road starts several decibels ahead of one facing it, because the roof mass between the room and the traffic is working for you. Where the only sensible room sits on the road side, the acoustic laminate carries more of the load and it is worth specifying up rather than down.
Height on the slope plays in too. A unit low on the slope, screened by the ridge from the direct line to the carriageway, sees less of the noise source than one high near the ridge with a clear path over the roof. None of this is a substitute for the right glass, but on a corridor site it is the difference between a bedroom you sleep in and one you avoid, and it costs nothing to get right at the survey.
Lorries, and the noise that is hardest to stop
The A12 and A14 meeting here means heavy goods traffic, and HGV noise is weighted towards low frequencies, the rumble you feel as much as hear. Low frequency is the hardest part of the spectrum to attenuate, and it is exactly where a thin symmetric double-glazed unit is weakest. That is why the asymmetric pane specification matters more here than beside an ordinary road. Two different glass thicknesses shift the resonances apart and close the low-frequency gap that a car-dominated road would not expose as badly. Acoustic laminate on top of that damps the vibration rather than simply adding mass. Together they make a real difference to the rumble. No rooflight makes a dual carriageway silent, and anyone claiming otherwise is overselling.

It is worth being clear that the glass only performs if the installation matches it. A rooflight rated for a good sound reduction figure loses much of it if the reveal around the frame is left as an air gap rather than packed with insulation, or if the frame is not sealed continuously to the structure. Sound finds the gap the same way water and draughts do. We are close to the A12. Will a rooflight make road noise worse in the bedroom?
