Capel St Mary sits about 7 miles south-west of Ipswich just off the A12, fifteen to twenty minutes down the road. It expanded sharply in the 1960s and 1970s from a small village into a large estate settlement, and the housing reflects exactly that period: brick, tile, generous plots, and a very high proportion of bungalows and chalet bungalows alongside the two-storey houses.
Bungalows change the rooflight conversation completely. In a two-storey house a rooflight is a supplement to the windows. In a bungalow, and particularly in a chalet with rooms in the roof, the roof is the primary route for daylight into the middle of the plan. That is a scheme to be designed rather than a single window to be ordered.

The deep plan problem
A bungalow of this era is typically wide and deep, with windows only on the outside walls. The centre of the plan, which is usually the hall, the bathroom and the back of the living space, sits several metres from any glass and gets almost nothing. It is the single most common complaint we hear from this stock, and no amount of paint colour fixes it.
Daylight falls off very quickly with distance from a window. A rooflight puts glass directly above the dark part of the plan, and because it faces the sky rather than the horizon it collects considerably more light per square metre of glazing than a vertical window does. That is why one modest rooflight over a hallway does more than doubling the size of a window at the end of it.
On a bungalow the sensible approach is to look at the whole plan, identify the two or three darkest points, and put a unit above each rather than one large opening in whichever room asked first. Several smaller openings distributed across the plan beat one big one almost every time.
Shallow pitch, and the number we measure first
Bungalow roofs from the 1960s and 1970s are frequently shallow. A wide, low-pitched roof was cheap to build and it is very common on this stock.
Every pitched roof window carries a minimum pitch rating, commonly around 15 degrees. Some are certified down to 10 degrees, but only with a specific low-pitch flashing kit and underfelt collar, and the rating is void without it. Below the rated angle, water does not clear the flashing lap fast enough, capillary action draws it back under the overlap, and it reaches the deck. Nothing about the workmanship is wrong. The unit is being asked to work outside the angle it was designed for.
So we bring a pitch gauge and get a number before discussing product. If the number is too low, the options are a low-pitch-certified unit with the correct kit, which keeps the window in the plane of the tiles, or a timber kerb built off the rafters carrying a flat-roof-type rooflight so the fall is created independently of the slope. The second costs more and works where the first will not.
Chalet bungalows and the first-generation trussed roof
Chalet bungalows already have rooms in the roof, which means the structure was designed for it and the conversion question does not arise. What they do have is very limited wall area upstairs, so the rooflight is doing serious work on both daylight and ventilation.
The straight bungalows are more variable. The 1960s and 1970s were when trussed rafter roofs became standard, so a lot of this stock has a loft full of diagonal web members. Those cannot be cut, because a truss is calculated as one engineered component. That does not prevent a rooflight, since we fit in the clear bay between trusses at their standard centres, but it does affect whether a loft conversion is realistic without an engineer designing replacement support.

Escape, guarding and thermal performance
Where a chalet’s upper room is a bedroom, Part B requires an escape route and on this stock it is usually the rooflight. That sets a minimum clear openable area and a position where the bottom of the opening can be reached from the floor, which normally means a top-hung or escape-hinged unit rather than a standard centre pivot.
Part L sets the U-value for the new opening. A modern double or triple-glazed unit with a warm-edge spacer and a thermally broken frame lands around 1.2 W/m²K against roughly 2.8 for an old light. A practical point specific to bungalows: rooflights over a hall or a bathroom are usually out of reach from the floor. A pole works but nobody uses it. An electric rooflight with a rain sensor gets used, which is the entire point of fitting an opening unit rather than a fixed one.
Plan the scheme, not the window: on a deep bungalow plan, two or three modest rooflights placed over the darkest points will outperform one large opening over whichever room complained loudest. We survey the whole plan before recommending sizes.
Sun tunnels for the rooms a rooflight cannot reach
Some points in a deep bungalow plan sit under a chalet’s upper storey, or under a run of roof too far from any slope to take a full rooflight over them. An internal bathroom or a windowless hall in the middle of the house is the classic case. Where a rooflight will not physically reach, a sun tunnel often will. It is a reflective tube that carries daylight from a small dome on the roof down through the void to a diffuser in the ceiling below, and it can turn a corner where a straight rooflight shaft cannot. The light is real daylight rather than a lamp, it needs no wiring, and it puts brightness into the one room in a bungalow that never had a hope of a window.
It is not a replacement for a rooflight where a rooflight fits, because a rooflight gives far more light and a view of the sky. It is the answer for the awkward internal point that nothing else reaches, and on this stock those points are common.
Reach, ageing in place, and the opening that gets used

A manual rooflight over a hall is often above head height with no easy way to work a pole, and a vent that cannot be reached is a vent that never gets used. Flat-roofed extensions on the bungalows
Bungalows of this era very often gained a flat-roofed rear extension, a kitchen, a utility or a sun room, and that back room is usually the darkest in the house because it reaches beyond where a wall window can light it. On a flat roof the two numbers that decide whether a rooflight lasts are the upstand height and the fall. The kerb has to stand proud enough that ponded water and driven rain cannot reach the glazing seal, and the deck needs a designed fall so water leaves rather than sits. Where the room is wide enough, a roof lantern collects light from more of the sky than a flat panel and lifts the ceiling. On a single-storey house, where the roof is such a large share of the whole envelope, getting the flat-roof detail right matters as much as the pitched-roof work.

On a deep bungalow plan, several smaller ones, almost always. Daylight from a single large opening concentrates in one place and still leaves the rest of the plan dim. Two or three modest units placed over the darkest points spread it across the house, disturb the roof structure less, and often cost less in total than one oversized opening that needs extra structural work.
The rooflight would be out of reach above our hall. How do we open it?
Realistically, with a motor. Opening poles exist and almost nobody uses them after the first month, which means the ventilation you paid for never happens. An electric unit with a rain sensor opens on a switch or a timer and closes itself when the weather turns. On a bungalow hall or bathroom rooflight it is the difference between a working vent and a fixed pane you paid extra for.
Our internal bathroom has no outside wall at all. Can it have daylight?
Often yes, through a sun tunnel rather than a rooflight. A sun tunnel is a reflective tube that carries daylight from a small dome on the roof down through the void to a diffuser in the ceiling, and it can turn around obstructions that a straight rooflight shaft cannot. Where a full rooflight fits we would use one, because it gives more light, but the sun tunnel reaches where it cannot.
