Is Triple Glazing Worth It for a Rooflight?
Triple glazing is worth it for a rooflight when the unit is large, when the roof is north-facing and heat loss dominates, or when a warmer inner glass surface matters enough to justify the cost. It is not worth it on a small unit where the frame dominates, or where the extra weight forces structural work that costs more than the glazing gain saved. Triple reaches 0.7 to 1.1 W/m²K against 1.2 to 1.4 for a good double unit, and runs a warmer inner surface, but it adds about 40 per cent to the glass weight and several hundred pounds to the price. The answer depends on the specific roof, not on the marketing.
Triple is sold hard. The physics is real, and so is the cost, so here is the honest test we apply at survey.

Three cases where the answer is yes
- The unit is large relative to the room. On a big rooflight the glass dominates the room’s heat loss, so halving the loss through it makes a real difference to comfort. A 3m² rooflight over a small snug is a strong candidate.
- The roof is north-facing and heat loss dominates. With little useful solar gain to protect, the whole argument is about keeping heat in, and triple does exactly that. A large north-facing unit over a well insulated room is where triple earns its keep.
- Comfort at the glass matters. The warmer inner surface of triple noticeably reduces the cold downdraught you feel standing under a large rooflight in January. Customers who are glad they paid for triple almost always name this, not the bill. If you spend a lot of time directly under a big rooflight, it is worth weighing.
Two cases where the answer is no
- The unit is small. On a 600 x 900mm bathroom rooflight the frame dominates the whole-unit figure, so the third pane changes very little while adding cost and weight. The money is better spent on a good double unit and a properly insulated upstand.
- The structure is marginal. On a retrofit opening the extra 40 per cent of glass weight can push the detail from doubled trimmers into needing a ring beam or a steel, and that upgrade can cost more than the glazing gain saved. On a marginal roof, triple can be the expensive tail wagging the dog.
The one that catches people out. On a south or west-facing roof where the room overheats, clear triple can be worse than a solar control double, because clear triple has a higher g-value and lets in more summer heat. If overheating is your problem, the glazing answer is solar control, not a third pane. So on a sunny aspect, double often beats triple.

The step from an old unit to a good double unit is a big improvement. The step from a good double to a triple is a smaller one, which is the definition of diminishing returns. The rule that settles most cases
If the budget is finite and the upstand is not yet properly insulated, spend on the junction before the third pane. A triple unit on a bare timber upstand loses more overall than a good double unit on a properly insulated one, because the junction is where a surprising share of the heat leaves.
