How Do You Stop a Room Overheating Under a Rooflight?
To stop a room overheating under a rooflight, get the g-value right in the glass first, add purge ventilation so hot air at ceiling level can escape, use external shading where it is practical, and fit an internal blind last. The measures, in order
- Solar control glazing. A solar control unit rejects heat at the outer pane before it enters the room, cutting the g-value from the 0.60 to 0.72 of clear glass to roughly 0.28 to 0.38 while keeping the room bright. - Purge ventilation. Hot air collects directly under the rooflight. An opening rooflight or a powered vent lets it escape while cooler air is drawn in low down. - External shading. An external blind or brise soleil intercepts the sun outside the glass, so it works well in physics terms. On a domestic roof it is awkward, weather-exposed and needs cleaning, so it is rarely the right answer, but where it suits it beats anything internal.
- Internal blind. Last. It stops light after the heat has already passed through the glass, so the heat is already inside and the blind warms up and re-radiates it. It cuts glare well and heat load only modestly.
Why film is not on the list. Solar control film applied to the room side of existing glass works on the wrong side, so it behaves like an internal blind, and it can cause thermal stress that cracks a pane, a real risk on a rooflight that already runs hot. We do not fit it. If the unit is sound and you cannot replace the glass, an external shade or an added vent is the honest route.
What you can do this week
If the room is unbearable now and the permanent fix is weeks away, these buy relief without spending on the wrong thing:
- Open the rooflight if it opens, and open a low window or door on the shaded side of the house, so hot air leaves at the top and cooler air comes in low. This cross-purge is the most effective free measure.
- Ventilate overnight and in the early morning, then close up before the sun is on the roof, holding the cool in.
- Fit or close an internal blind during peak sun. It will not stop the heat but it cuts glare and takes the edge off.
- A portable fan moving air across the room makes a hot room feel several degrees cooler even when it does not lower the temperature.
None of those fix the cause, which is a high g-value on a rooflight facing the sky. They make a hot summer bearable while you plan the glazing.
Why a rooflight overheats more than a window
A rooflight faces the open sky, so it collects sun from sunrise to sunset, and a flat or shallow-pitched unit is close to square-on to a high summer sun for hours. A wall window sees the sun at an oblique angle for part of the day only. So the same glass overheats a room far more in the ceiling than in the wall, and a flat rooflight overheats whatever way the house faces, because it sees the whole sky dome. That is why orientation barely helps a flat rooflight and the fix has to be in the glass.
