Double or Triple Skin Rooflight Sheets?


Choose triple-skin rooflight sheets for heated buildings and double-skin for unheated or lightly used ones. Adding a third skin improves the U-value and cuts condensation risk, at the cost of some light transmission and a higher price. The rule of thumb: if you heat the building and want to keep the heat in, the extra skin usually pays back; if you do not heat it, the extra skin is spending on insulation you do not need.

How the skins work

A rooflight sheet insulates by trapping air between skins. A single skin has none, a double skin traps one layer of air, a triple skin traps two. Each trapped air layer slows heat loss, so more skins means a lower U-value, which is the measure of heat loss through the sheet: lower is better. But each skin and each air gap also scatters and absorbs a little more light, so more skins means slightly less transmission. And more skins costs more. The choice balances heat loss against light and cost.

The condensation point

Condensation is the reason the skin count matters beyond the energy bill. In a heated building, warm, moist air inside meets the cold inner face of the rooflight, and if that face is cold enough the moisture condenses on it, drips onto stock and stains. A triple skin keeps the inner face warmer, because the extra air gap holds more of the building’s heat away from the cold outside, so the inner face stays above the point where moisture condenses. The rule based on heating. Heated building, kept warm through the day: triple skin, for the lower U-value and the warmer inner face that resists condensation. Unheated storage or distribution: double skin, because there is no heat to keep in and no warm moist air to condense, so the extra skin buys insulation you do not need. Conditioned or humid production space: triple skin, condensation control matters most here. The heating regime, not the roof, decides.

Light transmission, in proportion

The light lost to a third skin is real but modest, and it is usually worth trading for the thermal gain in a heated building. New multiwall polycarbonate runs roughly 50 to 70 per cent transmission depending on the wall structure, with each added wall taking a little off the top. If daylight is the overriding priority and the building is unheated, a double skin keeps more light. If the building is heated, the small light loss of a triple skin is a fair price for keeping the heat in and the inner face dry. This is a balance, and the survey and the building use set where it lands.

Cost in proportion

A triple-skin sheet costs more than a double-skin one, but the difference is modest against the whole installed cost of a rooflight replacement, most of which is access and labour rather than the sheet. On a heated building, the energy saved and the condensation avoided usually justify the small uplift over the life of the roof. Does a triple skin make the building darker?

The loss is modest and, in a heated building, usually worth trading for the lower heat loss and the condensation control. If maximum daylight is the priority and the building is unheated, a double skin keeps more light.
