There is no single best month to fit a roof lantern. The work runs all year in Suffolk and north Essex, because the roof is only open for hours rather than days and it is weathered watertight before the lantern goes on. The genuine planning question is lead time, not season: aluminium lanterns are made to your surveyed size and take three to five weeks, and the trade gets busiest from spring into early autumn. If you want the job done before Christmas, book the survey by late summer.
That is the honest answer, and it runs against the common assumption that rooflight work is a summer-only job. It is not, and understanding why is worth a few minutes before you plan the project. This sits under our main roof lantern installation page.

Why the work is genuinely year-round
The fear behind the summer assumption is a roof left open in the rain. That is not how a competent lantern installation runs. On a like-for-like replacement the roof is open for a matter of hours: we strip in the morning, and the kerb is rebuilt and the covering dressed watertight by the same afternoon, with or without the lantern on it. On a new opening the structural work takes longer, but the roof is still made watertight at the end of each working day. We never leave a roof open overnight, in any season. Two jobs on the programme are weather-sensitive, and both are managed rather than avoided:
- Opening-up work. Cutting into the deck is best not done in driving rain, so on a wet forecast we sheet and stage the work rather than exposing the deck to standing water. A tower or scaffold with a temporary cover lets the structural opening go ahead under protection.
- Membrane bonding. EPDM, single-ply and GRP coverings bond to the kerb using adhesives and, for GRP, a resin cure that is temperature-dependent. Cold slows the cure and damp interferes with adhesion. In winter we use cold-applied systems rated for low temperature, warm the surfaces where needed, and work to the manufacturer’s minimum application temperature rather than pressing on outside it.
Neither of those stops a winter installation. They shape how a winter installation is sequenced, which is a difference the homeowner rarely sees.
What each season actually means for the job

Lead time is the thing to plan, not weather
Because the lantern is manufactured to your surveyed opening, nothing starts on site until it is physically in stock. That protects you, since the roof is never opened waiting on a delivery, but it means the calendar runs from the survey, not the fitting day. A realistic timeline for a standard aluminium lantern:
- Survey and fixed quote, then order once you accept.
- Three to five weeks manufacture for standard sizes and colours. Longer for dual-colour finishes, marine-specification coatings for coastal sites, or timber units.
- A day or two on site for a straightforward replacement, three to four days for a new opening with structural work.
- Plus, on a retrofit, whatever Building Control and any structural engineer need beforehand.
Add those up and a replacement booked in October is comfortably done before Christmas, while one enquired about in late November is more likely a January job once manufacture and the festive shutdown are counted. If the lantern is going into a new extension, its timing is set by the build programme rather than by season at all.
The Suffolk trade seasonality trap. Everyone wants the work done for summer, so spring bookings stack up and the wait lengthens exactly when demand peaks. Booking a survey in autumn or winter often means a shorter wait and a calmer job, for a product that performs identically whatever month it was fitted.

The coastal footnote
On the exposed coast at Felixstowe, Harwich, Aldeburgh and Frinton, wind matters more than temperature for scheduling. A lantern is a large, light panel to lift, and craneage or a manual lift on an exposed roof is not safe in a strong onshore wind whatever the season. We watch the forecast for wind rather than for cold on those sites, and marine-specification coatings add a little to the manufacture lead time, so coastal jobs want booking with slightly more notice.
