What Is the Minimum Roof Pitch for a Rooflight?


Most standard centre pivot and top-hung rooflights are certified for roof pitches between 15 and 90 degrees. Below 15 degrees the water does not clear the flashing reliably and the manufacturer’s warranty no longer applies. Between roughly 10 and 15 degrees some makers offer a low-pitch installation kit that raises the unit slightly and modifies the drainage geometry to make it work. Below 10 degrees you are into flat roof territory, and the right product is a flat rooflight on an insulated upstand rather than a pitched unit.

The certified range, and why it exists

A rooflight is tested and warranted for a band of roof pitches, and outside that band the manufacturer will not stand behind it. The reason is water. A pitched roof sheds water by gravity, and the flashing around a rooflight is designed to part that flow and rejoin it below, relying on a certain amount of fall to keep it moving. Take the pitch too shallow and the water slows, spreads, and starts to track sideways and back under the flashing laps instead of running off. Take it too steep and different issues arise, though 90 degrees, a vertical installation, is at the far end and rarely relevant on a domestic slope.

Below 15 degrees: the low-pitch kit

Between about 10 and 15 degrees, a standard unit fitted straight would sit outside its warranty, but several manufacturers make a low-pitch installation kit. It raises the top of the unit slightly to steepen the effective fall across the glass and reworks the flashing and drainage so water clears. It is a specific, ordered kit for a specific model, not a workaround, and where the roof falls in this band it is the correct answer. Below 10 degrees: fit a flat rooflight instead

Under 10 degrees, a pitched unit is the wrong product however it is dressed in. The right answer is a flat rooflight sitting on an insulated timber upstand, or kerb, built up off the roof so the glass has a slight fall of its own and the weathering is taken care of by the upstand rather than by a pitched flashing kit. The awkward middle: shallow local roofs

A lot of 1960s and 1970s houses across Ipswich and the surrounding estates were built with shallow pitches, often around 17 to 22 degrees. That is inside the certified range, so a standard unit is correct, but it sits at the low end where there is less gravity doing the work. On those roofs the flashing detail has to be exact: the frame set to the precise depth for the covering, the head flashing dressing down into the tiles rather than bridging them, the soakers long enough and interleaved every course, and the underfelt collar carrying anything that gets past. Get any of those slightly wrong on a steep roof and it may still shed. Get them wrong on a shallow roof and it leaks. This is why setting out matters more as the pitch drops, and it is behind many of the failures on pitched rooflight leaks in driving rain.

Fitting a pitched unit below its certified range voids the warranty and builds in a leak, so the pitch is one of the first things we measure at survey. Pitch and daylight

Pitch affects how a rooflight performs as well as whether it can be fitted. On a shallow roof the glass sits closer to horizontal, so a taller unit is needed to gather good daylight and give a view, and on a steep roof a shorter unit set high does the same job because the glass is closer to vertical.
