Walk-On Rooflight Installation


A walk-on rooflight is a structural glass unit rated to carry foot traffic, used where a flat roof is also a terrace or balcony, or where glass is set into a floor or paving to light a basement or a room below. Its glass build-up is completely different from a standard flat rooflight: a thick laminated top with multiple interlayers sits over a sealed unit, and the frame and kerb have to carry a point load from a person, not just wind. That makes it a specification job rather than a catalogue one. Load rating, the anti-slip finish on the surface, the deflection limit and the structure beneath all have to be stated and matched, and none of it is guessed. The glass is the structure

On an ordinary flat rooflight the glass keeps weather out and the kerb carries the loads. On a walk-on unit the glass is a structural floor element that people stand on, so it is built up quite differently.

The walking surface is a thick laminated pane, often 30 to 40mm or more of glass made from several plies bonded with structural interlayers. That laminated top spreads a footstep, and if the outer ply is ever damaged the interlayers hold everything together so nobody drops through. Below the structural top sits a sealed insulating unit that does the thermal job, the low-emissivity coating and the argon fill. The exact build-up is calculated for the span, the load and the deflection limit, which is why it is quoted per unit rather than off a shelf.

Load ratings

A walk-on unit is specified to a load, and the load depends on the use. Domestic foot traffic, a balcony, a busier terrace and any point where a maintenance load might land are all different figures, set out in the relevant loading standards and confirmed by the engineer. The manufacturer publishes tested load tables for each glass build-up and each supported size, and the unit is chosen to sit inside those tables with margin, not on the edge of them. A unit rated for domestic foot traffic is not the same as one rated for a busy roof terrace, and the two are not interchangeable.

Anti-slip, because it is a floor

Wet glass underfoot is dangerous, and a walk-on rooflight will get wet. The walking surface is treated for slip resistance, usually with a ceramic frit pattern fired into the glass or an etched finish, chosen to give a rated slip resistance in the wet while still passing light. There is a genuine trade-off here: a heavier anti-slip pattern is safer and passes a little less light, a lighter one is clearer and needs care in the wet. We set the finish against how the surface will be used, whether it is a main walking route or an occasional light well, and we do not leave it as an afterthought, because a walk-on unit that is slick when it rains is a fall waiting to happen.

Flush terrace detailing and drainage

The appeal of a walk-on unit on a terrace is that it sits flush with the surrounding surface, so the paving or decking runs level up to the glass and light comes up through the floor. That flush detail is harder to weather than a raised kerb, because there is no upstand height to keep water out. It relies on the surrounding surface draining positively away from the glass, on a recessed frame that still gives the covering something to terminate against, and on the drainage being set out so water never ponds against the unit.

Drainage is the detail that catches people out. A flush unit in a terrace is a low point that water will find, so the falls in the surrounding deck and the outlet positions have to be designed to carry water past it, and a channel drain around the unit is often the honest answer. Get that wrong and the light well below becomes the thing the whole terrace drains into. This is why a walk-on unit is designed with the terrace, not dropped into it afterwards.

A walk-on rooflight is a floor with a view, and floors are engineered. The glass, the frame, the structure below and the drainage are all designed together to a stated load and a stated deflection. We do not guess any of it. Where a walk-on unit is in the brief, an engineer’s design and the manufacturer’s tested tables govern the job.

The structure beneath

A person standing on a walk-on unit is a point load, and that load has to travel from the glass, into the frame, into the structure around the opening, and out to the walls or beams that carry it to the ground. On most jobs that means an engineered frame rather than a simple timber kerb, and often a steel or a designed timber support around the opening. The roof or floor the unit sits in was not designed with a hole in it, so the trimming around the opening is a structural calculation, not a standard detail.

The survey questions that decide feasibility

Before a walk-on unit can be priced, a survey has to answer a set of questions, and the honest ones sometimes come back as no.

  • What is the use, and therefore the load? Occasional light well, domestic terrace, or a busy entertaining space. This sets the glass build-up.
  • What is below, and can it carry the load out? The structure around the opening has to take a point load to the supporting walls. If it cannot, it needs designing, and that may mean steel.
  • What is the finished floor build-up? A flush terrace needs the glass to sit at the level of the paving or decking, so the whole build-up has to be worked back from the finished surface.
  • How does the terrace drain? Falls and outlets have to carry water past a flush low point without ponding against it.
  • How does the unit get there? Structural glass is heavy. Access for craneage or a mechanical lift is a real constraint, and on a restricted site it can decide the maximum size.
  • What is the exposure? On the coast the frame and fixings are upgraded to marine specification.

Common questions about walk-on rooflight installation

How much weight can a walk-on rooflight take?

It is specified to a stated load for its use, from domestic foot traffic to a busy terrace, confirmed by a structural engineer and matched to the manufacturer’s tested load tables with margin. The glass build-up is chosen for that load and the span. A unit rated for occasional domestic use is not the same as one for a busy entertaining terrace, so the use has to be settled at survey.

Is walk-on glass slippery when wet?

Untreated glass would be, which is why the walking surface is given an anti-slip finish, usually a fired ceramic frit pattern or an etched surface rated for slip resistance in the wet. Can any flat roof take a walk-on rooflight?
