A walk-on rooflight is a structural glass unit rated to carry foot traffic, fitted where a flat roof doubles as a terrace, balcony or light well. The top pane is thick laminated glass designed as a floor, not a window. It is specified to a stated load rating and deflection limit, and it is installed to a structural engineer’s design.
The distinction that matters: an ordinary flat rooflight is designed for wind load and snow load, both of which are spread evenly across the whole pane. A walk-on unit is designed for a point load, which is one person’s heel in one place, plus the possibility of something being dropped on it. Those are different engineering problems, and no amount of thicker ordinary glass turns one into the other.
How the glass is built up
A walk-on unit is two things stacked: a structural top laminate that does the load work, and a sealed insulating unit below it that does the thermal work.
The top laminate is typically three plies of toughened or heat-strengthened glass bonded with structural interlayers, most often ionoplast rather than the standard PVB used in car windscreens and ordinary laminated glazing. Ionoplast is stiffer and it holds its shape under sustained load and at summer roof temperatures, which is exactly what a floor pane has to do. Total thickness on a domestic unit commonly runs from about 30mm to well past 50mm, and the whole laminate is heavy: a 1.5 x 1.0m walk-on unit is a lifting operation, not a two-person carry.
Below that sits a conventional double-glazed cavity with a low-emissivity coating and a warm-edge spacer, then an inner pane. That lower unit is what gets you a sensible U-value. The structural laminate above contributes very little thermally, because glass is glass.
Three specification numbers should appear on any walk-on quote you are asked to sign:
- The distributed load rating, usually stated in kN/m². Domestic foot traffic is commonly designed at 1.5 kN/m², with higher figures where the terrace is a fire escape route or a commercial deck.
- The point load, tested separately, because a distributed rating tells you nothing about a stiletto or a dropped tool.
- The deflection limit under that load, expressed as a fraction of the span. Glass that meets the load rating but visibly flexes underfoot is a unit nobody in the household will willingly stand on.
The visible surface is normally sandblasted, fritted or given an anti-slip pattern. That is not decoration. A wet, smooth glass panel set flush into a terrace is genuinely dangerous, and the slip rating of the finish is part of the specification rather than an option.

The three site conditions that must be true
Before we will quote a walk-on unit, three things have to be established. If any one of them fails, the honest answer is a different product or a different design, and we will say so at survey rather than after the glass is ordered.
1. The structure below can carry a floor, not a roof
A flat roof deck is designed for wind, snow and maintenance access. A terrace is designed for people, furniture and everything people bring outside. The joists, the trimmers around the opening, and the walls or beams the whole thing lands on all have to be checked against the new loading by a structural engineer. On the 1960s to 1980s flat-roofed garages and utility extensions at Kesgrave, Rushmere St Andrew, Chantry and Whitton, the answer is frequently no without strengthening, because those decks were never intended to be stood on at all.
The walk-on glass is only ever as good as what is under it. A unit rated at 1.5 kN/m² sitting on trimmers that are not is a false sense of security.
2. The perimeter kerb can be built to carry a point load and stay watertight
An ordinary rooflight upstand resists water and wind. A walk-on kerb also carries the edge reaction from a loaded pane, in a location that is by definition walked on and knocked into. It has to be structurally fixed into the trimmers, insulated continuously with the roof insulation so the perimeter does not condense, and detailed so the covering is dressed to the full height without the finished surface creating a trip. Where the unit sits flush with a deck or paving, the drainage around the frame has to be designed rather than assumed, because a flush unit removes the upstand that normally keeps water out.
This is the condition that most often turns a straightforward-looking job into a redesign. We build to a minimum 150mm upstand on ordinary flat rooflights, 200mm on open-coast sites, and a flush walk-on detail has to earn back that protection some other way.
3. The space below is habitable, and Part K guarding is resolved
Walk-on glass is worth the money when it lights a room that has no other way of getting daylight: a basement, a cellar conversion, a light well between a terrace and a boundary wall, a hallway under a first-floor roof terrace. If the space underneath is a garage or a store, the money is better spent elsewhere.
Alongside that, the guarding question has to be answered. Sorting the balustrade after the glass is set is expensive.
If all three are not true, do not force it. A non-trafficked flush glass rooflight with a paved margin around it, or a smaller walk-on panel set within a larger deck, will usually solve the same daylight problem for a fraction of the cost. We would rather redesign at survey than sell you glass the roof cannot carry.
What it is not
Three things get confused with walk-on glazing regularly enough to be worth naming.
It is not a non-fragile rooflight. Non-fragile classification means a unit will not let a person fall through if they land on it accidentally, which is a safety requirement on commercial roofs. It does not mean the unit is designed to be walked on deliberately and repeatedly. Fragile rooflight replacement covers that separate problem.
It is not a thicker version of a standard flush unit. The frame, the kerb, the load path and the glass composition are all different.
It is not something to retrofit into an existing rooflight opening. The opening was sized and framed for a different load. Occasionally the structure allows it. Usually the trimmers change.

Where these come up in Suffolk and north Essex
Domestic walk-on work here clusters in two places. The first is central Ipswich, where Victorian and Edwardian terraces have deep, narrow rear additions and dark basement or lower ground rooms, and where a light well at the base of a rear yard is often the only route daylight can take. The second is contemporary new-build and remodelled coastal property, where first-floor roof terraces are a design feature and the room below wants daylight from above.
On the coastal belt at Felixstowe, Harwich and Aldeburgh the specification tightens further. The frame carries a marine-specification coating, fixings are 316L stainless rather than grade 304, and dissimilar metals are isolated, because a walk-on frame sits in standing water more often than an upstand-mounted unit does and chloride concentrates at every fixing head.
