What a glass box actually is
A frameless glass box, sometimes called a glass box rooflight or a structural glass rooflight, is a flat or shallow-sloped rooflight where the glass itself is the structure. The vertical upstands are glass too, so from inside you get an unbroken glazed box projecting slightly above the roof with almost no visible frame. A roof lantern, by contrast, is a pitched glazed structure with a ridge, glazing bars and an aluminium or timber frame carrying the glass at 20 to 25 degrees. The glass box is about minimalism; the lantern is about presence and light.

Cost and structure: where they diverge most
A glass box costs more than a lantern of the same footprint, and the reason is structural. In a glass box the glass is doing the structural work, which demands thicker laminated build-ups, precise fabrication and a perfectly formed opening, and it leaves less tolerance for anything being slightly out of true. A lantern’s aluminium or timber frame carries the glass, which is a more forgiving and more economical way to span an opening. Both need the opening framed properly, with a ring beam over about 1.5m and a structural engineer’s calculation on a retrofit, but the glass box asks more of the fabrication on top of that. Drainage and cleaning in the Suffolk climate
A lantern’s pitch is a real advantage here. At 25 degrees it sheds rain fast and carries debris and organic film off with it. A glass box is flat or only gently sloped, so it holds a shallow film of water and needs its fall designed carefully to drain at all, and it collects more of the pollen inland and the salt film near the coast that a pitched face runs off. Neither leaks when built correctly, but the glass box needs cleaning more often to stay clear, and its flatter surface is exactly the condition a lantern’s pitch is designed to avoid. The frameless look has a maintenance cost. A glass box gives you an unbroken sheet of sky with almost no frame, and that is genuinely striking. But flatter glass drains slower and shows dirt sooner than a pitched lantern, and on an overhead surface you cannot easily reach, that is a practical trade you are accepting for the appearance.
Thermal performance and overheating
Both products can be specified to beat the Part L replacement floor of 2.2 W/m²K comfortably, with a good example of either landing around 1.2 to 1.4 with argon-filled solar control double glazing and a warm-edge spacer. The difference is solar gain. A glass box presents a large uninterrupted sheet of glass, so on a south or west aspect it can gain a lot of heat, and a solar control coating with a g-value around 0.28 to 0.38 becomes essential rather than optional. A lantern faces the same issue but its pitched geometry spreads the gain across faces. The recommendation by property style
- Modern, architect-led property where minimalism is the brief: the glass box, if the budget carries it. The frameless look is what you are buying and nothing else delivers it.
- Standard kitchen extension, modern or period: the lantern, almost always. Better value, better drainage, and a look that suits a wider range of buildings.
